The catalysis research in the graduate program, directed by Professor Gates, is focused on fundamental characterization of supported metal complexes and clusters. It involves precise synthesis from organometallic precursors on high-area porous supports, including metal oxides and zeolites. The supported species are characterized as catalysts, with emphasis on spectroscopy of functioning catalysts to determine structures of the catalytic species. The techniques include X-ray absorption, IR, and NMR spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Some of the supports are structurally well-defined, including zeolites (one of Professor Navrotsky‘s research areas), and some are nanostructured oxides such as ceria.
